World Health Organisation (WHO) Mental Health Advice
The WHO have issued guidance about how to support your mental health at this time - here is a summary of the key points:
It is normal to feel sad, stressed, confused, scared or angry during a crisis but there are things you can do that might help:
• Connect - Talk to people you trust, such as friends and family.
• Support - If you feel overwhelmed, talk to a health worker or counsellor.
• Get the facts - Find a credible information source you can trust such as the WHO website or NHS rather than listening to rumours that may make you feel uncomfortable.
• Limit news feeds - the near-constant stream of news reports can cause anyone to feel worried, so reduce the time you spend watching or listening to media coverage that you find upsetting.
• Coping Skills - Draw on coping skills that have helped you to cope with difficulties in the past.
• Self Care - Take care of your basic needs and continue with helpful coping strategies - eat sufficient and healthy food, keep to your sleep routines, engage in physical activity and stay in contact with family and friends. Even if self-isolating you can stay connected via e-mail, social media and telephone.
Avoid unhelpful coping strategies - don’t use smoking, alcohol or other drugs to deal with your emotions.
• Protect yourself AND support others - assisting others benefits both the helper and the person being helped!
